02/17/2001 - The top-ranked and unbeaten Notre Dame women's basketball team is upset, 54-53, by Rutgers at the RAC in Piscataway, New Jersey. Tammy Sutton-Brown leads the Lady Scralet Knights with 12 points, including a conventional 3-point play with 28 seconds left to establish the final winning margin. All-American Notre Dame center Ruth Riley is plagued by foul trouble, finishing with 12 points and only four rebounds, but she'll earn Most Outstanding Player honors in the finals of the NCAA tournament when the Irish win their first national title by beating Purdue.

02/15/2004 - Race driver Dale Earnhardt, Jr. wins the Daytona 500 exactly six years after his father won this flagship stock car event on his 20th attempt. Driving a Chevrolet, Dale Jr. holds off Tony Stewart by several lengths at the finish to win NASCAR's traditional season opener on his fifth attempt. President Bush is on hand to issue the traditional "Gentlemen, start your engines" command.

02/14/1993 - Current U.S. Open champion Tom Kite shoots a final-round 10-under-par 62 to win the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic at La Quinta, California, by six strokes over Rick Fehr. After losing here twice in sudden-death playoffs in the last decade, Kite leaves no doubt this time, carding a 35-under 325 to break the tournament record (331) shared by Corey Pavin and Mark O'Meara as well as the PGA Tour 90-hole standard (329) shared by Andrew Magee and D.A. Weibring. Kite finishes with a flourish, birdieing the last four holes to win the 18th tournament of his career and increase his all-time Tour-leading earnings to over $7.9 million.

02/13/1942 - At 176 pounds, heavyweight Billy Conn has no trouble winning a unanimous 12-round decision over 164-pound middleweight champion Tony Zale in a one-sided nontitle bout at Madison Square Garden. There are no knockdowns as the popular Irishman from Pittsburgh dispatches the game but overmatched Zale. Many observers see this contest as merely a tune-up for Conn before a rematch for the heavyweight title with Joe Louis after their great fight last summer, but World War II will preclude a second meeting until 1946, when Conn will be no match for the Brown Bomber.

01/20/74 - Jim Harrison of the WHA's Alberta Oilers becomes the first player in the modern era to score 10 points in a big-league game, leading to an 11-3 blowout of the New York Raiders at Edmonton Gardens. Harrison's three goals and seven assists break the WHA single-game points record of seven established by Danny Lawson of Philadelphia earlier this season and the NHL standard of eight set by Montreal Canadians Rocket Richard (1944) and Bert Olmstead (1954).

01/20/74 - At age 26, Johnny Miller captures the Tucson Open by three strokes over rookie pro Ben Crenshaw and becomes the first golfer to win the first three events of the year on the PGA Tour. Following his impressive wins at Pebble Beach and Phoenix, Miller is now 37 under par for the year. A 40-foot birdie putt on the 10th hole today clinches the event in what will prove to be his finest season. He'll lead the PGA earnings list and be named Player of the Year.

After the Knicks squander a seven-point lead in the final minute, Orr hits a 22-foot jumper off glass from the head of the circle as time expires to beat Boston, 111-109. It's a fleeting moment of triumph for a struggling Knicks team against the defending NBA champions, and Orr is quickly engulfed by his joyous teammates after sinking his game-winning buzzer-beater.

Boston scores six goals on only seven shots in the first period against Toronto goalie Don Simmons. Andy Hebenton and Dean Prentice each have hat tricks as Boston wins its third straight game for the first time in almost four years. Shaking off this debacle, the veteran Leafs team will win their third straight Stanley Cup this spring.

The Hawks will complete a perfect regular season (27-0), earning their first-ever No. 1 national ranking, before stumbling to Xavier in the Atlantic-10 tournament and Oklahoma State in the Elite Eight of the NCAA tourney.
